Updates

Notes from Johan on what's changing in Plonkus.

2026-10-09Upload your own imagesClues on Plus take image files now, not just links. Plus a roomier clue editor and updated terms.

You can upload images now. Until today, putting a picture in a clue meant pasting a link to one. Fine if your image lives on the internet, useless if it lives on your computer. Uploading turned out to be what people expected, so we built it. On Plus you can now pick a file, drag it in, or paste a screenshot straight into the clue.

Most formats just work. JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF (they still move), and iPhone photos. Big photos get shrunk on the way in, so you don't have to think about file sizes.

Links still work. If you'd rather paste a link, that's one click away in the same spot. Nothing changes for boards that already use them.

Sharing a board shares its images. Anyone you share a board with can see the images in it, and save them. Obvious when you say it out loud, but worth saying.

The clue editor got roomier. Wider, with bigger text. For everyone, not just Plus.

Terms and privacy, updated. We updated the Terms and Privacy Policy to cover uploads: what's allowed, the limits that apply, who can see your images, and how to report a board. We also fixed a line that said deleted accounts hang around for 30 days. They don't. Deleting your account is immediate.

2026-08-31A bigger buzzer, and a cure for mashersThe Plonk button stays on screen now, got bigger, and can push back on mashing.

The buzzer stays put now. Someone said the Plonk button "goes away in about 2 nanoseconds". Fair. It only showed up for the moment it was live, so you never knew where to aim. Now it sits there all game, greyed out until the buzzers open.

It's also much bigger. About half your phone screen. Easier to hit when you're watching the TV, not your hand.

Button mashing has an answer. There's a new Buzzer cooldown switch in the game menu, off by default. Turn it on and hammering before the buzzers open starts a two second timer that restarts on every press, and keeps running once they open. Press when they're actually open and it's a normal buzz, first one wins.

2026-08-27Daily Doubles are now optionalA switch to turn them off, plus smoother sharing and a couple of fixes.

Daily Doubles, now with an off switch. They live in the game menu under Settings, on by default. Worth knowing: even if you never marked one, the game quietly adds a couple for you. So if you're just running through a board (practicing solo, say) and don't want the interruption, flip it off and every clue plays straight.

Saving a shared board is easier. When someone shares a board with you, you can keep your own copy without signing up first. It saves to your device. Make an account later and it comes with you.

Changing your password is simpler. From your account, tap the button and we email you a link to pick a new one. No digging up your old password.

Quieter fixes. Your edits are harder to lose now, and we sorted a glitch where Safari could flash an error right after we pushed an update. You probably didn't notice. Good.

2026-06-18Free AI, templates, and a quicker way to startAI clue help is now on the free tier, plus board templates and a few fixes.

AI is now free to try. Every account gets 10 AI clue generations. Open a clue, hit Generate with AI. Plus still does the heavy lifting: no meaningful cap (hundreds a month), and it fills a whole category in one tap.

Start faster with templates. The new-board screen now offers a blank board or a ready-made format (Exam Review, Training Refresher, Sprint Retro, Party Quiz). The category headers are filled in, you add the clues.

AI got sharper. Generated clues now read your board's theme for context, and won't repeat something already in the category.

Also shipped recently: print a host sheet for any board (the Print board button in the editor); buzzer rooms reconnect cleanly after your phone sleeps; scoreboards scale for big rooms; Round 2 edits stay on Round 2; and smoother clue dragging.

We also refreshed our Terms and Privacy Policy to cover the free AI tier.

2026-05-14Why Plonkus is adding PlusA note on the June 15 launch: what's changing, what's not, and why.

If you've used Plonkus before, you've helped shape it. People have built boards, hosted classroom games, run buzzer nights with friends, and sent us feedback. Thank you.

Plonkus is changing on June 15, 2026, and we want you to know why before it happens.

What's changing

We're adding a paid tier called Plus at $7/month or $49/year. From June 15 onward, free accounts have:

  • 3 saved boards (instead of unlimited)
  • 3 buzzer players per game (instead of unlimited)
  • Text-only clues (no YouTube or image embeds)

Everything else stays exactly as it is. Rounds, Daily Doubles, Final Jeopardy, sharing, classic mode, all of it.

What's not changing

  • Every board you've already created stays forever. If you for example have 7 boards today, you keep all 7. They stay playable, editable, and shareable. Nothing gets deleted.
  • The core game is unchanged.
  • We're not going to sell ads or your data. Never have, never will.

Why

Plonkus exists because we wanted a Jeopardy-style game that felt great, not the generic, ad-stuffed alternative you find everywhere. It's grown beyond what we can fund out of pocket:

  • Cloud hosting. Small per user, but adds up as more users start using Plonkus.
  • AI-assisted board generation that's coming with Plus. Those API calls cost real money per board.
  • Time spent improving Plonkus and fixing bugs. That only works if Plus generates enough revenue to justify the hours.

If Plonkus stayed entirely free, we'd have to let it stagnate or stop maintaining it. Neither felt right.

What we're promising

  • The free tier stays genuinely playable, not crippled. 3 boards plus 3 buzzer players covers most casual use.
  • We won't quietly tighten free limits later. What launches on June 15 is what stays.
  • If you're a teacher, student, or genuinely can't afford Plus but want it, email support@plonkus.fun. We'll work something out.

A thank-you for being here early

If you've been using Plonkus before this change and want to try Plus on us, email support@plonkus.fun with the subject "early user" and we'll set up 30 days of free Plus on your account. No hoops.

Thanks for being here.
